      Using a Children’s Book in a Math Lesson There’s a huge variety of books available that provide many opportunities for teaching math lessons. And while the books and lesson goals differ, I follow the same guidelines when planning these lessons: Read the book aloud. (At times, reread the book if it’s appropriate to do so.). The following sample lists include books for Primary grades (~1 - 3), Intermediate grades (~ 4 - 5), and Intermediate/Middle School grades (~5 - 8). Books are categorized in the following ways: PB = Picture Book: Illustrations support or extend the text. Picture books are generally of a vocabulary and interest level appropriate for primary.

    Literature circle groups and book talks can be used with reading workshop. Many teachers will use literature circle groups with reading workshop to further develop students' critical reading skills. Teachers will also allow their students to give book talks. Book talks help students practice their oral presentation skills and give students a chance to share books with their classmates. Teachers often use children’s literature to enhance or supplement a lesson in language arts, social studies or ’s not too often that you hear about teachers using children’s literature in math lessons.I’m not sure if it’s because teachers don’t know how to, or if it’s that they never realized how easy and effective it can be.

So many people think math and literature connections only make sense for the elementary years, but I’m here to tell you middle school students still benefit from the connection!.
